Benjamin Stambouli

Tottenham Hotspur signed 24-year-old midfielder Benjamin Stambouli from French side Montpellier for £4.7 million, with the hope he can add some stability to the Spurs squad.

Stambouli made over 110 league appearances for the Stade de la Mosson outfit, winning the French top division, Ligue 1, in 2012.

The midfielder is just one of many players brought to White Hart Lane this summer, as they look to break into the top four of the Premier League.

Career

Stambouli had been floated around during his youth career, starting out for his hometown team, Marseille.

Over the next eight years, he had starred for lowly clubs Gallia Uzes (twice) and Sedan, before settling at Montpellier in 2004.

After six years in the youth squads, Stambouli signed his first contract at the southern France side, and has gone onto become a regular starter in the side.

His 26 appearances during the 2011/12 season helped shock the Ligue 1 table and claim the club’s first title.

The feat was even more surprising considering they finished 14th the season before, but were brought back down to earth within two years, remaining in the French top tier by just two points in May.

While results have not always gone his way, Stambouli has showed glimpses at Montpellier of what he is capable of.

He is seen an elegant holding midfielder, who is graceful in the tackle, mainly due to his excellent reading of the game.

Stambouli can also drive forward and has brilliant vision to pick out a striker in space.

Internationally, the midfielder has not had much luck breaking into the French national squad, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Morgan Schneiderlin and Blaise Matuidi ahead of him in the pecking order.

He has played for the under-21s on three occasions, but will be hoping that good performances at Spurs can get him noticed by Didier Deschamps.

Competition

Stambouli won’t be walking straight into the starting XI, as Tottenham have several players in his position.

The North London club only bought the likes of Etienne Capoue and Paulinho last summer, whilst youth product Nabil Bentaleb was promoted to the first team.

Capoue has not settled in well at Spurs, while Bentaleb is just 19 and will be a future starter for the club.

New boys

Stambouli will be looking to start as brightly as fellow new boy Eric Dier, with the hope he can leapfrog himself into the side, but it will depend on if he can handle the rigours of the Premier League.

The Frenchman is one of six new faces at Spurs, with Dier joining from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

Tottenham also signed Swansea duo Michel Vorm and Ben Davies, as well as, Federico Fazio from Sevilla.

American defender DeAndre Yedlin signed, but has been loaned back to Seattle Sounders for a season.

Tottenham fans, here is what you have to look forward to from Stambouli...
